Your customers aren't just Googling anymore — they're asking ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews. Here's what that means for how your business gets found.
For twenty years, "getting found online" meant one thing: ranking on Google. That's no longer the whole picture. A growing share of your customers now get their answers directly from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, and Google's AI Overviews, often without ever clicking through to a website. That shift is why AIO — AI Optimization — has become a term business owners need to understand alongside SEO, not instead of it.
"SEO helps people find you through a search engine. AIO helps AI systems understand you well enough to recommend you."
Traditional Search Engine Optimization is built around one core loop: Google crawls your site, ranks it against competing pages for a given keyword, and you earn traffic when someone clicks your result. Success is measured in rankings, organic sessions, and click-through rate. Everything from page speed to backlinks to keyword targeting exists to win that click.
This is still essential. Most purchase research still starts with a search bar, and ranking well remains one of the most reliable, lowest cost ways to bring qualified visitors to your site. SEO isn't going away — it's becoming one layer of a bigger visibility strategy instead of the whole strategy.
AI Optimization is about a different outcome entirely: being cited or recommended when someone asks an AI system a question instead of typing it into a search box. When a potential customer asks ChatGPT "what's a good Shopify developer for a UK footwear brand," AIO is the work that determines whether your business gets mentioned in that answer.
Where SEO optimizes pages for keyword relevance, AIO optimizes content for machine readability — clear structure, direct answers, verifiable facts, and consistent information the AI can trust enough to repeat. The underlying signals AI systems weigh most are content authority, how clearly a page is structured, how directly it answers a question, and how clearly it identifies who or what it's about.
The cleanest way to separate the two: SEO success is a ranking position and a click. AIO success is a citation, a mention, or a direct recommendation inside an AI-generated answer, often with no click at all. That's a meaningful shift for how you measure whether your marketing is working — "we rank #3 for this keyword" and "the AI recommends us for this question" are two different wins, and you need visibility into both.
They also draw on overlapping but distinct signals. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) focuses specifically on winning featured snippets and Google's AI Overviews. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) focuses on earning citations from large language models like ChatGPT and Claude. AIO is the umbrella term covering both. In practice, most businesses don't need to memorize the acronyms — they need content built well enough to perform across all of them.
AI Overviews now appear on a large share of Google searches, answering the question directly on the results page before a user ever scrolls to a traditional listing. At the same time, more people are skipping search engines entirely and asking ChatGPT or Perplexity first, especially for research-heavy decisions like choosing a service provider, comparing products, or evaluating a purchase.
If your business only exists in the traditional ten blue links, you're invisible in a growing number of these conversations. A business that shows up consistently, with clear facts an AI system can confidently repeat, has a real advantage over competitors who haven't adapted their content for how people are actually searching in 2026.
The good news: the same fundamentals that improve SEO also improve AIO, so you're not running two separate strategies. Structure your content around the direct questions your customers actually ask, using clear headings, scannable lists, and FAQ-style sections an AI can lift cleanly. Vague, marketing-heavy copy performs poorly in both worlds.
Back up claims with real specifics. Independent research on generative search has found that adding expert quotes, statistics, and clear citations meaningfully increases how often content gets referenced by AI systems — because AI engines are more confident repeating a claim they can verify. The same logic that builds trust with a human reader builds trust with the model summarizing your page.
Keep your business information consistent everywhere it appears — your website, Google Business Profile, social profiles, and directory listings. When an AI system finds conflicting details about your hours, services, or contact information across the web, it often plays it safe and leaves you out of the answer entirely rather than risk repeating something wrong.
AIO isn't a replacement for SEO, and anyone telling you to abandon one for the other is oversimplifying a shift that's still unfolding. They're complementary layers of the same goal: being the business that gets found, trusted, and recommended, whether someone is scrolling search results or asking an AI assistant a direct question.
The businesses that treat this as an "and" instead of an "or" are the ones building a real advantage right now, while most competitors are still optimizing for a search experience that's already changing underneath them.
